Kalwaria Zebrzydowska

The Sanctuary of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is located in Poland on the hill of Żarek (527 m. a.s.l.) and on the slopes of the Mount of Lanckorona (530 m. a.s.l.), about 40 km. southwest of Krakow, and 15 km. east of Wadowice.
In 1999, the Sanctuary of the Passion and of the Madonna of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska was inserted by the UNESCO in its World Heritage List, with the following motivation: “Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is a cultural site of great beauty and of spiritual importance. Its natural setting, which contains some symbolic places of worship related to the Passion of Jesus Christ and the life of the Virgin Mary, has remained almost unchanged since the 17th century. Still today, it is a place of pilgrimage”. The Sanctuary of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska consists of a basilica in baroque style dedicated to the Madonna of the Angels, a convent of the minor Franciscan friars (called affectionately in Poland bernardini) and a series of baroque and mannerist style chapels situated in an area of six kilometres, dedicated to the Passion of Jesus and to the life of the Madonna. The construction work began in 1601, when Mikołaj Zebrzydowski, Voivoda of Krakow, ordered the erection of the Church of the Crucifixion according to a chalk model of the Basilica of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem.
From 1604 to 1609, following a project of the Italian architect Giovanni Maria Bernardoni and the Flemish architect and jeweller, Paolo Baudarth, the church was built dedicated to the Madonna of
the Angels together with the convent of the Bernardini Friars. In 1605, construction work started on the Calvary, which, in alternating
stages, was completed in 1886. In 1654, the church and the convent were enlarged, wanted by the founder’s great-grandson Michał Zebrzydowski, along with the construction of the precious chapel of the Madonna of the Calvary.
