Chapel IV - The Immaculate Conception of Mary
The chapel, in the square of the Sanctuary, was built by the Countess of Sartirana in 1598 as a thank you for the birth of her son. The Countess is depicted in sculpture praying, on the left, while on the right there are her husband, Count Onofrio Arborio di Gattinara, and her son, Carlo Francesco. The three characters, elegantly dressed, offer important evidence of the clothing of the time.
The statues were created by Giovanni Tabacchetti and Paolo Giovenone, who also created the high-relief above the altar with the Encounter of St. Joachim and St. Anne in front of the Golden Gate of the Temple of Jerusalem. The frescoes are attributed to Giorgio Alberini. In the side niches the scenes depict the Annunciation given by the angel to Saint Anne and Saint Joachim with the flock.
