Chapel III - The Nativity
The construction of the chapel started in 1605. Martino Retti from Ticino created the sculptures of St. John the Baptist and Zechariah in the niches of the pronaos. The statues composing the internal scenes were recently attributed to Christopher's brother, Marco Antonio Prestinari (1615 ca.), who had already been working at the mount on a group of sculptures preserved in the oratory of the Immaculate Conception.
The frescoes, by Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (1658), depict the Adoration of the Magi, the Announcement to the Shepherds, the Massacre of the Innocents, the Preparation for the Flight into Egypt and the Warning of the Angel to Joseph, while the squares are the work of the painter Francesco Villa from Varese.
On the external wall in 1983, Renato Guttuso painted The Flight into Egypt.
