Chapel 20 - The Last Supper

The chapel already existed at the end of the fifteenth century and occupied the chapel hall now adjacent to the Casa del Pellegrino Hotel, to the right of the Basilica.
The statues, wooden mannequins finished and painted only in the visible parts (limbs and heads) and clothed with painted fabrics date back to the end of the fifteenth century - beginning of the sixteenth century and their style is similar to that of the Lombardy-region sculptors Giovanni Pietro and Giovanni Ambrogio De Donati.
The Mystery of the Last Supper was moved several times, initially to adapt it to the correct chronological sequence of scenes of the life of Christ, according to the wishes of the bishop of Novara Carlo Bascapè (1593-1615).
In 1776 a new arcade was built in the square of the Basilica in line, under the expanded chapel, with the mystery of the Last Supper with its statues, food and dishes. The new space was decorated inside with paintings in Rococo style by Antonio Orgiazzi the Elder who completed them, signed and dated them in 1780, and who also designed the consoles and trays.  The table is laid with pieces of different materials: blown wax, terracotta, raw earth, painted wood, marble and papier-mâché, made between the end of the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, which represent the food.
