Chapel 25 - Jesus at the Court of Caiaphas
It depicts the scene of Jesus bound and led before Caiaphas in the hall where the scribes and elders were gathered, who answered the question whether he was the Son of God by saying: "Yes, I am".
The scene was already included in the Book of Mysteries by Galeazzo Alessi (1565-1572). However, it was Bishop Bascapè who ordered its construction at the beginning of the seventeenth century. It was built thanks to a donation made by Claudio Lacobino from Fobello (1613) and donations from the citizens of Varallo.
The statues were shaped by Giovanni d’Enrico in the third decade of the seventeenth century and were placed in the chapel in 1628. At the end of the nineteenth century, the sculptor Giuseppe Antonini added beards and plaster hair to some figures. The frescoes, completed on the same date, are the work of Cristoforo Martinoli from Valsesia, also known as "il Rocca".
