Chapel 27 - Jesus led before the Court of Pilate for the first time

It depicts the scene of Jesus, bound, led to the first trial before Pilate, Roman governor.
This chapel is located in the Pilate Palace. It was built in the early seventeenth century by will of Bishop Bascapè to house the main mysteries of the Passion of Christ.
The vault depicts episodes from the Old Testament (the prophet Daniel led to judgment before Darius, King of the Medes, and condemned) in close correspondence with the scene of the judgment of Christ shown below. The back wall depicts the "way of sorrow" that Jesus walked as he climbed his way to Calvary.
The two d'Enrico brothers worked on it. Antonio, also known as Tanzio, worked on the paintings (1617-1618). Giovanni, a sculptor, shaped the figures in terracotta (about 1615-1617). The result was an extraordinary combination between painting and sculpture, evident especially in the crowd, partly painted and partly in relief, which on the right wall follows Jesus to the hall of Pilate, reminding of the procession of the Magi in the chapel by Gaudenzio Ferrari.
