Chapel 34 - Pilate washes his hands
Located on the first floor of the Pilate Palace, it depicts the scene of Jesus returned to the Roman governor who accepted the proposal of the crowd to crucify him, but in order not to appear responsible for this decision, he washes his hands in front of the people.
It was painted by Antonio d'Enrico, also known as Tanzio, from Varallo (1618-1619), who designed the scene together with his brother Giovanni, obtaining an extraordinary optical illusion thanks to the perfect integration of painting and sculpture. In 1621 Geronimo Rocca supplied the windows of the chapel.
