Chapel 37 - Jesus affixed to the cross

It depicts the scene of Jesus who is nailed to the cross at the top of Calvary, before the Virgin Mary, the pious women and St. John, surrounded by the crowd.
In 1603 Bishop Bascapè planned to build this chapel between the chapels of the Ascent to Calvary and the Crucifixion. In fact, in 1617, when Cardinal Ferdinando Taverna made a pastoral visit to the Sacred Mount, construction on the building had yet to begin. It was then built in the fourth decade of the seventeenth century thanks to the donations of Giovanni Antonio Tornelli.
Giovanni d'Enrico, with the collaboration of Giacomo Ferro and his team, shaped the statues between about 1635 and 1638. However, the scene in 1641, when Bishop Tornielli made a pastoral visit to the Mount, was still to be completed in some details, such as the hair and armor of the characters while the painted decoration, by Melchiorre Gherardini known as Ceranino, was completed.
