Chapel 12 - The Baptism of Jesus
It tells the Gospel episode of the baptism of Jesus: John the Baptist sprinkles water on his head, two angels on the banks of the Jordan river are holding Christ's clothes and God from above states: "This is my beloved son: listen to him."
It was built between 1572 and 1578 to house the scene of Baptism and the Book of Mysteries did not call for a new chapel to be built (1565-1572) but for a votive chapel to be reused to house this episode of the Gospel, which contained the group of sculptures of Jesus bearing the cross (now chapel 13). The building freely replicates Alessi's models also for the interior setting. The statues of Christ, the Baptist and the two angels, completed in 1578, are the work of an anonymous artist trained in a Lombardy-region school. Initially, the project included a stream of water flowing inside the chapel (the holes at the ends are still visible) to simulate the Jordan River. The figure of the Eternal Father, in stucco, affixed to the vault, was shaped by the artist Gabriele di Cristoforo Bossi from Milan, who also painted the frescoes and the painted decoration of the statues (1584).
