Chapel 22 - The sleeping disciples
It houses the scene of Jesus who, after praying in the olive grove, finds the three disciples had fallen asleep.
An original chapel of the sleeping disciples was built in the early seventeenth century at the behest of Bishop Bascapè, on the slopes of the hill of Mount Tabor where the chapel of the Transfiguration (No. 17) stands. The statues of the two disciples and of Jesus were shaped by Giovanni d'Enrico between 1605 and 1606 and painted by Melchiorre d'Enrico who also decorated the walls of the chapel with paintings which were completed in 1612.
In 1863, following the expansion of Casa Parella (on the left side of the square of the Basilica), the chapel, slightly reduced in size was incorporated into the new building preserving its group of sculptures. In 1865, Paolo Emilio Morgari made the wall paintings and redecorated the statues.
