Chapel 33 - "Ecce homo"
It depicts the scene in which Pilate, saying: "Ecce homo", from the loggia of his palace, shows Jesus to the crowd, tied by the villains, wounded by the flagellation and crowning with thorns, and asks the crowd if the crowd wishes to free Jesus or Barabbas. The screaming crowd answers to crucify Jesus.
The chapel is located on the first floor of the Pilate Palace and can be accessed through the holy staircase, which was supposed to reproduce the staircase of St. John in Lateran in Rome, of which each step was donated by a community of the valley.
The frescoes are the work of Pierfrancesco Mazzucchelli, also known as Il Morazzone (1609-1616). The statues, most of which were already made in 1610, were shaped by Giovanni d'Enrico's team and painted by his brother Melchiorre.
