The Pilate Palace (chapels No. 23- 27- 29- 30-31-32-33-34-35)
An ancient Pilate Palace already existed in the sixteenth century, the new one dates back to the reorganization of the Sacred Mount ordered by Bishop Carlo Bascapè who grouped together in this building the main mysteries of the passion of Christ.
The project was implemented according to the ideas of the bishop in the early seventeenth century.
The building houses the various stages of Jesus' trial before Pilate and the main moments of the Passion from the first to the second meeting of Jesus with Pilate (chapels No. 27 and No. 29) to the Flagellation (No. 30), Crowning with Thorns (No. 31), the mystery of Jesus led to the Praetorium (No.32), the Ecce Homo (No. 33), the scene in which Pilate washes his hands (No. 34) and the Condemnation of Jesus to death by Pilate (No. 35).
The staircase connecting the two floors of the building part of the project to recreate the city of Jerusalem ordered by Bascapè, with the Palaces of the Judgment of Jesus, was conceived as an imitation of the holy staircase of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome, of which each community of the Valley was invited to donate a step.
