Family discovery
This itinerary takes you on a child-friendly exploration of the heritage of the Sacri Monti (Sacred Mountains). Designed for families, but not only, it reveals the stories of three Sacred Mountains and their surroundings, amidst trees and chapels.
The route begins in the Biella mountains, where the Sacro Monte of Oropa opens the doors of the eponymous basin, a place where nature reigns supreme. Next, you will reach a must-see stop to understand the origin of these World Heritage sites: Varallo and its Sacro Monte. Here, we will discover why, at the end of the 15th century the Franciscan friar Bernardino Caimi designed this small Holy land. To fully appreciate its artistic richness, the visit to the Sacro Monte will be followed by a visit to the Palazzo dei Musei in Varallo, which it also offers activities for families. Finally, the last day will offer you a unique backdrop: Lago d’Orta. Here stands the Sacro Monte of Orta, which you can explore amidst panoramic views and chapels dedicated to the life of San Francesco of Assisi. In continuous dialogue with the lake, during your visit someone will surely ask; “Why don’t we go to that island?” Great idea! Small boats will take you in just a few minutes to the Island of San Giulio, which you can quickly walk along a circular path that embraces its entire perimeter.
