Perched on a promontory overlooking the lake and the Island of San Giulio, the Sacro Monte of Orta is a place that invites reflection through beauty, here, art becomes a tool for meditation: it does not impose, but accompanies. The theme is the life of San Francesco of Assisi, a figure who knew to merge spirituality and humanity into a universal message. It is precisely this humble and profound tone that it is breathed along the route.
The twenty-one chapels, distributed along tree lined avenues and panoramic terraces, host an extraordinary figurative cycle: life-sized polychrome terracotta statues, intense frescoes, and scenographic architectures. Since the late 16th century, artists called to Orta have transformed the mountain into a true “open-air sacred theatre”, where each episode of the Saint’s life becomes a visual and spiritual experience.
The landscape plays a fundamental role. The climb is gentle, interrupted by small squares and glimpses of Lake Orta, almost inviting the visitor to pause, breathe, and observe. There is not urgency in this journey, only a slow unfolding of scenes that speak of poverty, brotherhood, and inner choice. It is a spirituality without rhetoric, made up of gestures, glances and silences.
