Sacro Monte di Varese

Varese, the Mountain of the Gentle Climb

The Sacro Monte of Varese does not impose itself: it reveals itself. Climbing along the avenue of the chapels, immersed in the woods of Campo dei Fiori Park, visitors find themselves on a journey that is both physical and symbolic; a gentle ascent toward the Marian sanctuary that dominates the summit, dedicates to the Madonna del Monte, the finishing line of ancient devotion. The route, just over two kilometres long, is marked by fourteen chapels dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary, which open in sequence like a stone rosary.

Construction begun in 1604, was conceived according to a precise scenographic concept; each chapel is a small theatre, where faith takes shape in terracotta and is coloured in the frescoes. The scenes are populated by living figures in motion, often captured in moments of connection; hands touching, glances meeting, bodies telling stories. It is an art that moves without rhetoric, engaging the visitor in a silent dialogue.

The landscape accompanies without invading. The mountain, covered with chestnut and birch trees, filters the light and offers glimpses of the lake and the Lombard plain. But what makes this place special is the rhythm that invites you to slow down. Every pause is an opportunity for contemplation; each chapel is a gateway between humanity and divinity. In Varese, spirituality is not sought: it is encountered while walking.
