Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie

In the heart of Varallo, at the foot of the climb that leads to the Sacro Monte, the Church of Santa Maria Delle Grazie stands as one of the highest expressions of art and spirituality in the Valsesia area. Built at the end of the 15th century at the request of the Franciscan friars, it was conceived as a visual and spiritual guide to the devotional path of the Sacro Monte. Its architecture is sober and faithful to the “Bernardine model”, featuring a single nave and a screen separating the space reserved for the friars from that for the faithful, according to the tradition of the mendicant orders. The church’s central feature is the celebrated Parete Gaudenziana (Gaudenzian Wall), a masterpiece by Gaudenzio Ferrari dated from 1513. This impressive cycle of frescoes, one of the most significant of the Piemonte’s Renaissance, illustrates twenty episodes from the life and Passion of Christ, culminating in the grand central Crucifixion. The figures, highly expressive and meticulously detailed, convey the sacred narrative with extraordinary visual power and emotional depth. The wall is not merely a work of art, but also a catechetical instrument, designed to engage and instruct the faithful through imagery, in a direct dialogue between painting and devotion.

In addition to Gaudencio’s frescoes, the church preserves older painted decorations attributed to the Lombard school, further enriching its spiritual and artistic atmosphere. The simple, intimate environment invites silence and contemplation. Visiting Santa Maria Delle Grazie is more than an artistic experience; it is a moment of reflection in which art, faith, and history meet in perfect harmony.
