Museum of the Landscape of Lake Como

In Tremezzo, overlooking the western arm of Lago di Como, Villa Mainoni houses the Museo del Paesaggio del Lago di Como (Museum of the Landscape of Lake Como). The Villa, built between 1670 and 1672, was once the historic residence of the Mainoni family and is part of a larger architectural complex that also includes a park, several outbuildings and a tower. The ensemble is the result of transformations and expansions over time.

The museum stands out for its ability to recount the landscape, environment and culture of the territory, with a particular focus on the Tremezzina area. A multimedia and interactive system, with touch screens, allows visitors to compare historical maps and period images with the current layout of the territory, offering a dynamic and engaging reading key.

The atmosphere invites visitors on a journey through time, among glimpses of the past and transformations of the landscape. It is possible to explore the differences between yesterday and today, capturing the evolution of the places and their relationship with the lake.

Among the permanent collections, a notable one is a collection of old prints from the 16th to the 19th centuries, which provides an overview od the most iconic places in the area: Como, Cernobbio, Tremezzo, Bellagio and the famous lakeside villas such as Villa Carlotta, Villa del Balbianello, Villa Olmo and Villa d’Este.

An original experience is the “virtual boat trip”; a panoramic view in motion, set in the 19th century, accompanies visitors along the two shores of the lake, evoking the charm of a distant era.

Finally, a section is dedicated to the relationship between the lake and the cinema. Through films and summary sheets, we retrace some of the films shot on the Lario; from classics like The Pleasure Garden by Alfred Hitchcock to modern productions such Star War: Episode II, with indications of the locations featured in the filming.
