Sacro Monte di Varese

The Climb Across woods and Sky

The Sacro Monte of Varese invites you to an experience that combines art and nature in a breathtaking landscape. The climb winds along a cobbled path approximately two kilometres long, marked by fourteen chapels built between 1604 and 1698. The route winds through the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park, through chestnut and oak forests that offer shade and coolness during the climb. From the most open points, sweeping views appear over the Lombard plain, Lago Varese, and, on clear days, as far as the Monte Rosa. The architecture of the chapels and the sacred settings blend with the surrounding landscape, creating a harmonious dialogue between man-made structures and natural beauty.

Upon reaching the summit, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte welcomes visitors with its dominant position. Around the complex is a secluded small village, with narrow streets, stone houses and panoramic views that invite visitors to pause and observe. Here, the beauty of the landscape becomes an integral part of the spiritual and cultural journey, transforming the climb into a journey of observation and discovery.
