A thousand-year history

Belmonte's history began almost four thousand years ago. It is the story of people who lived from stockbreeding and agriculture on the slopes of this hill in the second millennium BC. But it is also the story of the inhabitants of a fortified Lombard village, of the nuns who founded a women's monastery in the 11th century, of the Franciscans who replaced them, and, finally, of Michelangelo da Montiglio, the friar who decided to found a Sacro Monte.
