Bishop Bascapè (1593-1615) ordered and personally supervised the design of the chapel. The group of sculptures, depicting Francis, his father, the Bishop of Assisi (Bascapè's portrait), the Notary and the members of the Curia, was created by Cristoforo Prestinari. The frescoes by the Fiammenghini brothers (1613) depict, from the right, Saint Francis who prays to the Cross to know his fate and the answer of the Cross. Then, Francis drawing a cross on his cloak, to transform it into a tunic. Finally, Francis returns to Assisi, seeking money and bringing material to repair the church of San Damiano.
