Chapel 8

Saint Francis seen by the Friars on a chariot of fire

The chapel was built by 1629 and decorated only by 1641. The statues were made by Giovanni D'Enrico, and the paintings by Cristoforo Martinoli, also known as Il Rocca. They had both already worked at the Sacro Monte of Varallo. The paintings depict the Apparitions of Saint Francis, the Vision of Ezekiel, the Apparitions of Christ to the disciples, Elijah kidnapped on the chariot of fire, and Solomon's parents watching an angel ascending to heaven. Below, the statues show the reactions of the friars, just awaken, in seeing Francis on the chariot of fire. The wooden chariot is by Bartolomeo Tiberino (1641), well-known in the area of Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta.
