St. Francis, out of humility, is led naked through the streets of Assisi
The chapel was financed by the knight Costanzo Besozzi from Milan, and his sister Aurelia, and was completed in 1698. The painted decorations are by the brothers, Giovanni Battista and Gerolamo Grandi, from Varese, and Federico Bianchi. The former two artists painted the perspective quadratura and the architectural elements, while Bianchi painted the figures. They had already worked together at the Sacro Monte of Varese and in Milan. The group of sculptures depict a naked Saint Francis, being led through the streets of Assisi. It was started by Bernardo Falcone, and then completed by Giuseppe Rusnati. Five other figures are by Dionigi Bussola, perhaps taken from another chapel. In the mid 18th century, the scene was completed with more characters, recognizable by the colourful clothes and jewels.
