Chapel 15

St. Francis receives the stigmata on Mount Verna

The chapel, one of the first to be completed, was already built in 1594, and its interior was completed in 1617.  It was financed by Giulio Maffioli from Orta, who moved to Rome and was a leading figure in the city's financial world.  The group of sculptures by Cristoforo Prestinari shows Saint Francis receiving the stigmata on Mount Verna (17 September 1224).
The original frescoes, which were badly damaged, were renovated in 1783, by the painter Riccardo Donino from Milan. They depict the Trinity, Mary, Saint John, Saint Joseph and the apostles Peter and Paul.
