The chapel is mentioned for the first time by Bishop Visconti (1698), who recorded the presence of nineteen statues - a crowd of faithful and ill people, and the guards - placed around the tomb of Francis. The sculptures were made by Giuseppe Rusnati (1682-1684), who also worked at the Sacri Monti of Varese and Domodossola. The artist Antonio Busca, from Milan, who painted the frescoes, had already worked at the Sacro Monte of Varese, where he decorated the chapels with the sculptures by Dionigi Bussola.
