Chapel 20

The Canonization of St. Francis (Canobian Chapel)

The chapel was one of the first to be built thanks to a generous bequest by the abbot Amico Canobio from Novara.  The works, after the death of the abbot, slowed down.
The large group of sculptures is the work of the apprentices of Dionigi Bussola and represent Pope Gregory IX who delivers to the cardinal the canonization decree of Francis. A large group of Cardinals, Bishops and Notables - a full gallery of figures - and the Franciscan General Father, knelt before the Pope, take part in the scene.
On the walls, the Milanese painter Antonio Busca performs a compendium of the life of Saint Francis (1674-1682); on the vault, the glory of Saint Francis.
