The triumph of Canonization
The last chapel of the Sacro Monte is a real triumph. More than fifty statues, inside a majestic Baroque church, celebrate when Pope Gregory XI officially recognized Francis as a saint in 1228. His canonization was one of the fastest ever. It took only two years after his death. However, in this chapel it is set at the end of the seventeenth century with notables, bishops, prelates and cardinals wearing wonderful Baroque clothes. For a pilgrim of the time, Francis’ story was a contemporary and a real one.
