Chapel 3

The Visitation

It illustrates the encounter between the Virgin Mary and Elizabeth, both expecting a child by divine will.

Initially, the chapel was added to the complex of Nazareth around 1544 to stage the Annunciation.

However, in 1578, according to the new project by Galeazzo Alessi, the scene of the Visitation was set up with ancient statues that went subsequently lost.

The terracotta sculptures were remade by 1613 by an unknown artist. The frescoes were completed in 1544 by Filippo Cavallazzi, an artist of the late Gaudenzian period, active in Valsesia.

In the lunettes are depicted the prophets who prophesied the Annunciation. The fake tapestries simulate the interior of a house and were repainted at the end of the nineteenth century.
