Chapel 6

The Nativity

It depicts the scene of the birth of Jesus in a cave.

The altar with the star underneath, the cave and the two lateral staircases are very similar to those still visible today in the lower basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem in the Holy Land.

The statues are the work of Gaudenzio Ferrari. Except for that of the child, stolen in the mid-nineteenth century and then replaced by a wooden sculpture, created by Giuseppe Antonini.

The original group was placed inside the chapel shortly after 1614. It aims at replicating a three-dimensional altarpiece, inspired by the one painted by Gaudenzio Ferrari for the Collegiata Church of Arona.
