The Sleeping Disciples

The scene represents Jesus who, after praying in the olive grove, finds the three disciples fallen asleep.

The original chapel was built in the early 17th century by Bishop Bascapè, on the slopes of Mount Tabor, where the chapel of the Transfiguration (n.17) stands now. The statues of the disciples and of Jesus were shaped by Giovanni d'Enrico around 1606, and painted by Melchiorre d'Enrico, who also decorated the walls of the chapel with paintings, completed in 1612.

In 1863, Casa Parella, on the left side of the Basilica square, was enlarged. So the chapel was slightly reduced in size, and incorporated into the new building, with its sculptures. In 1865, Paolo Emilio Morgari painted the frescoes and redecorated the statues.
