Jesus at the Court of Caiaphas
The scene stages Jesus bound and led before Caiaphas in the hall where the scribes and elders were gathered. There he was asked whether he was the Son of God, to which he answered: "Yes, I am".
The scene was already in the Book of Mysteries by the architect Galeazzo Alessi (1565-1572). However, it was Bishop Bascapè who ordered its construction at the beginning of the seventeenth century. It was built thanks to donations by Claudio Iacobino from Fobello and by the citizens of Varallo.
The statues were shaped by Giovanni d’Enrico and placed in the chapel in 1628. At the end of the 19th century, the sculptor Giuseppe Antonini added beards and plaster hair to some figures. The frescoes were painted by Cristoforo Martinoli from Valsesia, also known as "Rocca".
