Chapel 29

Jesus led before the Court of Pilate for the Second Time

The scene stages Jesus sent back by Herod to Pilate for the final judgment.

The architectural part of the chapel was completed in 1628, when Bishop Volpi visited the Sacro Monte, but there were no decorations or statues. Its completion still took half a century.

The group of terracotta sculptures is the work of Giovanni d'Enrico's workshop and was completed in 1641.

In 1658 the Valsesian artist Pierfrancesco Gianoli was commissioned to paint the frescoes. In 1670, the Grand brothers painted the architectural background on the walls. Gianoli painted the scenes with the figures only by 1679. He also signed and dated his self-portrait on the left wall (1679). Later it was removed from the wall and now it is at the Pinacoteca in Varallo.
