Chapel 32

Jesus led to the Praetorian Palace

Here Jesus is represented with a rope around his neck, led by the villains to the Praetorian Palace in front of Pilate.

The chapel is in the Palace of Pilate and was built later than the other chapels of the building. Three painted wooden statues were taken from older chapels to set up the scene. Jesus and the villain who drags him by the rope came from the chapel of the Pietà (n.40) built in the early sixteenth century.

These statues were sculpted by Gaudenzio Ferrari in about 1508, and were moved here after 1628 by order of Bishop Volpi. This was part of the project for reorganizing the upper part of the Sacro Monte, wanted by Bishop Bascapè. The other statues were shaped by the Giovanni d'Enrico's workshop in about 1640. The walls were frescoed by the Valsesian Pierfrancesco Gianoli in 1657.
