Pilate Washes his Hands

Located on the first floor of the Palace of Pilate, the scene shows Jesus taken again before the Roman governor. In fact, Pilate has accepted the choice of the crowd to crucify him, and washes his hands in front of the people. This symbolizes his not taking responsability for Jesus' death.

It was painted by Antonio d'Enrico, also known as Tanzio from Varallo (1618-1619), who designed the scene together with his brother Giovanni. They obtained an extraordinary optical illusion, thanks to the perfect integration of painting and sculpture. Finally, Geronimo Rocca added the glass windows of the chapel in 1621.
