The Climb to Calvary
The scene shows Jesus carrying the cross on his shoulder. Among the crowd, he meets Veronica and his mother Mary. On the background are painted the city of Jerusalem and Mount Calvary.
The chapel was financed by the Marquise Claudia of Savoy Fieschi from Masserano. I was nearly completed in 1593, except for the vault. It was intended to stage the scene of the Crucifixion.
Instead, in 1594, Bishop Bascapè decided to stage Jesus carrying the cross , providing detailed instructions on the decorations. By 1602, the statues were shaped by the Flemish sculptor Juan de Wespin, also known as "il Tabacchetti", who had already worked at the Sacro Monte of Crea.
By 1607, the walls were frescoed by Pierfrancesco Mazzucchelli, also known as "il Morazzone". The contracts with the sculptor and the artist, show that the bishop wished to keep a strong narrative continuity with the chapel of the Crucifixion created by Gaudenzio Ferrari.
