Jesus affixed to the Cross

The scene shows Jesus, who is nailed to the cross at the top of Mount Calvary, before the Virgin Mary, the pious women, Saint John, and surrounded by the crowd.

In 1603, Bishop Bascapè planned to build this chapel between the chapels of the Ascent to Calvary and the Crucifixion. Yet, in 1617, when Cardinal Ferdinando Taverna made a pastoral visit to the Sacro Monte, the construction of the building had yet to begin. It was built in 1640  thanks to the donations of Giovanni Antonio Tornelli.

Giovanni d'Enrico, with the collaboration of Giacomo Ferro and his workshop, shaped the statues between 1635 and 1638. However, in 1641, when Bishop Tornielli made a pastoral visit to the Monte, some details, such as the hair and armour of the characters, had still to be completed. While the frescoes by Melchiorre Gherardini, known as Ceranino, were completed.
