The Pietà

In this scene, the Virgin Mary is holding in her lap the body of Jesus, just laid down from the cross, by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. While the pious women are helping to wash the body and prepare it for burial.

This chapel already existed in 1514, and contained the episode of Jesus stripped of his clothes (c. 32), Around 1508, Gaudenzio Ferrari painted a fresco depicting the climb to Calvary, with the soldiers, the two thieves, and the three Marys (Mary Magdalene, Mary of Clopas, and Mary Salome). On the back wall, some soldiers are rolling the dice for Jesus's clothes.

After 1628, Bishop Volpi changed the setup. The original statues of Jesus and the villain who drags him to Calvary, were brought to the chapel 32, where they still are today, while the other ones were removed. The new scene of the Pietà, with a group of terracotta statues by Giovanni d'Enrico, was made by 1640. Instead, the sixteenth-century frescoes by Gaudenzio Ferrari remained unchanged.
