Jesus wrapped in the Shroud
The scene depicts the moment when the body of Jesus, once laid down from the cross, after being sprinkled with fragrant aromas, is wrapped in the Shroud. The background shows the paintings of the city of Jerusalem and Calvary with the three crosses.
This chapel already existed at the end of the fifteenth century. It was in the same space with the previous chapel, and contained a group of polychrome wooden statues called The Anointing Stone. They are the work of the De Donati brothers, and now are at the Pinacoteca of Varallo.
The sculptures were replaced in 1826 with a new group in terracotta, made by the neoclassical sculptor Luigi Marchesi. At the end of the 19th century, the Valsesian painter Pier Celestino Gilardi frescoed the walls.
