The Chapel of San Carlo
The scene depicts the room in which San Carlo Borromeo stayed when he visited the Sacro Monte in 1584. It contains the figure of the praying saint and the bed on which he slept.
The Sepulchre was his favourite place, where he used to pray for long hours. For this reason, in the 18th century, a small space was created next to the Oratory. There was reproduced the room of the Franciscan monastery where Borromeo stayed, and also his bed was brought there.
Later, in 1722, Giuseppe Arrigoni modelled the statue of the saint. Finally, in 1945, when the exit door of the Oratory was opened, the scene was moved to the current space, decorated with fake tapestries.
