Christ Dead
The Holy sepulchre is the oldest chapel of the Sacro Monte. It is the faithful copy of the shrine of the Holy sepulchre in the Basilica of Jerusalem, or the tomb of Jesus. Visitors who enter the Sepulchre of Varallo find something different from the monument in the Holy Land: in Jerusalem the tomb is empty, here there is an extremely realistic statue of Jesus’ body. In Varallo pilgrims could visit the Holy Sepulchre, almost 4000 kilometers away from Jerusalem. They could also see what happened to the body of Christ. It was like witnessing the event, as if the sacrifice was repeated every day, every time a pilgrim crossed the threshold of the Sepulchre.
