Bethlehem in Varallo

The founder of the Sacro Monte wanted to bring the entire Holy Land to Varallo, not just the city of Jerusalem.  So Bernardino Caimi ordered to build two groups of chapels to commemorate two important places in Palestine: Nazareth and Bethlehem.

Chapels 6, 7 and 8 form  Bernardino Caimi's Bethlehem, one of the few areas of the Sacro Monte that have remained almost unchanged since the early sixteenth century.

Here Caimi transferred a fragment of the Holy Land to Varallo: the stairs that connect chapels 6 and 7 to chapel 8 are the perfect copy of those that in Bethlehem lead to the grotto of the Nativity.

Go down the stairs to the Nativity for the next stop.
