This drawing is from a famous book on the architecture of the Holy Land published in 1609 by the Franciscan friar Bernardino Amico. It shows the grotto of the Nativity.
Look around: Chapel 6-7 faithfully reproduces that monument in Bethlehem. Among the many details copied are the pair of stairs, the ‘altar of the Nativity’ where Jesus was born, and the altar of the Magi, where their gifts were placed.
Inside the chapel the statues represent the Adoration of the Shepherds, by Gaudenzio Ferrari and his workshop around 1515-18. Continue the tour and go to chapel 5.
