The Art of Gaudenzio Ferrari

The chapel of the Arrival of the Wise Men was added to the Bethlehem compound  around 1520. The paintings and statues are by Gaudenzio Ferrari and his workshop: the three Wise Men, their servants and some horses are in terracotta, while the  rest of the procession is painted on the walls.

In this way Gaudenzio wants to convince the viewer that the painted and sculpted figures are part of the same narrative.

For example, the brown horse on the left jumps out of the wall into the chapel. Imagine the impact  of such a scene for a 16th-century pilgrim! This new narrative strategy that expands the scene beyond the statues by means of the frescoes became the reference model for all the artists who worked at the Sacri Monti in the following centuries.
