Adam and Eve

The chapel of Adam and Eve was built a few years after Porta Maggiore, starting in 1565. It is the first stage on the new tour designed by Galeazzo Alessi. It is a small but rich and monumental piece of architecture. The columns, the pediment, the portico, the stuccoes and the marbles of the façade were inspired by the architecture of ancient Rome and were an absolute novelty for the Sacro Monte: the chapel of Adam and Eve brought to Varallo the latest fashions  from the city of Milan, then one of the great capitals of European finance. Imagine to find today on this mountain a building by Renzo Piano or Massimiliano Fukas: this must have been the impression this architecture created by Galeazzo Alessi made on the visitors of that time.
