The Crucifixion is probably the most important chapel of the whole Sacro Monte. In the compound first designed by Bernardino Caimi the building hosting the Crucifixion was in the shape and size of the Calvary chapel in the Basilica of the Holy sepulchre in Jerusalem.
The building was renovated by Gaudenzio Ferrari between 1517 and 1520. Gaudenzio's statues and frescoes in the Crucifixion remained for centuries the artistic model for the chapels to be built at the Sacro Monte di Varallo.
