The Crucifixion as a model

Between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the Fabbrica asked the artists to be inspired by the chapels of Gaudenzio Ferrari, built almost a century earlier. In the scenes of the Passion of Jesus we can clearly recognize people with the same features as in the Crucifixion, which are repeated from scene to scene, from chapel to chapel. If you look closely, you can see how the same soldiers ‘move’ from one building to another: you can see the ugly faced man with the big nose, the man with a goiter, the soldier with the striped shirt and the strange helmet, and many others.

In the chapels of the Sacro Monte you can read a well-orchestrated story, with a carefully written plot and a very precise direction.
