The building that hosts chapel 33 is called ‘Pilate's palace’. According to the Bible, the passion of Christ took place inside the Antonia Fortress in Jerusalem, which was the residence of Pontius Pilate, Roman governor in the holy city.
The staircase inside Pilate's palace reproduces the shape and size of the ‘Scala Santa’, the staircase climbed by Christ before being sentenced to death.
