The façade of the Basilica

The eclectic façade of the Basilica del Sacro Monte was designed by the architect Giovanni Cerutti di Valduggia and built between 1891 and 1896, with the donations of the Costantinos and by Giulia Durio. The new railway opened in 1886, made it possible to transport the marble for the facade from Carrara in Tuscany.  The monumental bronze doors with stories from the Bible too arrived from Milan by train. After decades of failed or abandoned projects, the façade was finally inaugurated on 20 and 21 June 1896. Great celebrations were organized for the occasion: fireworks, concerts and a very refined French dinner.
