The Flagellation of Christ

The chapel was ordered by the Litta brothers from Milan, as the family coat of arms reminds us. The statues are by Martino Retti (1608). He was aked to create statues representing images as naturally as possible. In the centre, there is the suffering Christ attacked by villains with grotesque shapes. In the background, there are three large scenes painted by Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli, also known as "Il Morazzone" (1609). They depict Jesus before Caiaphas, Jesus and Barabbas before the crowd, Jesus being undressed and dragged to the flagellation.
