The Crucifixion

The chapel, located at the top of a steep slope, was completed around 1623. The scene of the Crucifixion is extremely dramatic, with the very high wooden cross, which is about to be hoisted, placed between the crosses of the two thieves and surrounded by a crowd of more than fifty statues by Dionigi Bussola (1661-1668). The scene is made more majestic by the crowd painted on the walls by Antonio Busca from Milan, signed and dated 1668. The Third Arch dedicated to Saint Ambrose leads to the Glorious Mysteries. The statue of the patron saint of Milan is by Carlo Antonio Buono. He is holding a whip, which in the traditional iconography, recalls his fight against heretics.
