Chapel 10 contains fifty statues signed by the Lombard sculptor Dionigi Bussola. Born in 1615, he trained in Rome before returning to Milan, where he was admitted as a sculptor to the prestigious Fabbrica del Duomo. Bussola excelled in large scenographic compositions, succeeding in expressing the Baroque spirit at its best. This can be seen in the decorations in the dome of the Chiesa dell’Assunta at the Sacro Monte in Varallo, as well as in the statues of the Passion in Varese. He was also active with his workshop at the Sacro Monte di Orta and Domodossola. He ended his career as chief sculptor at the Certosa di Pavia. His works are characterised by the nobility of faces and gestures, as well as a strong sense of drama and realism. He freed sculpture from traditional compositional schemes and fully embraced Baroque scenographic means.
